Vibration Plates for "Fat Disorders"
If you have painful swelling, hyper-mobility, bruise easily and that scale keeps climbing no matter how much you workout or starve yourself - You may have a fat disorder. Your body's lymphatics need help, and nothing moves lymph faster or easier than a vibration plate.
You’ve probably heard of Lymphedema, but what about Lipedema/Lipoedema? What about Dercum's, Madelung’s or loose connective tissue disease? There are a number of medical conditions referred to as “fat disorders” and excess weight, or the inability to move that scale, is a common symptom. Unlike what we may have been raised to believe, restricting calories and being regularly active doesn’t always have a significant impact.
These disorders have some major differences in comparison to being overweight or having obesity. They present in disproportionate ways with large gains perhaps below the waist, but nothing in the arms or torso. Sometimes the opposite occurs. It's also not uncommon for multiple areas to be affected.
For those of you more versed with some of these conditions, I recognize that a more accurate term would be loose connective tissue diseases. I more commonly call them “fat disorders” because I want this information and this community to be found. When searching online before you knew any of the accurate terminology or had a diagnosis, you just knew you have this weight, or things just hurt - the fat itself hurts, bruises all the time, you have hyper-mobility, and many of you starve yourself without realizing there is more going on.
Our body is made up of different types of connective tissues that make our body “work” or perform various functions. A key type of connective tissue is our fascia - this stretchy connective tissue encases, or wraps around our muscles, organs, and other parts of our body, helping them to stay in place, keep their shape and move smoothly.
When our fascia isn’t working properly, it can become tight, stiff, or lose flexibility, cause pain, reduce mobility, or other symptoms. This can occur due to an injury, inflammation, or lack of movement, and it affects how our muscles and joints move, and your overall ability to function.
The common link between these disorders lies in issues with our lymphatics, the blood vessels or often in both and starting self care NOW is key to improving overall.
We have an imbalance in our body’s ability to move fluid through our lymphatics, often with a greater amount of fluid accumulating than our system has the ability to push out. Over time swelling, pain and other more severe symptoms can develop. The lymphatics need help moving that lymph along be that through activity, massage or other means. Self care and starting it early can be your best defense against progression.
When we move, lymph moves! Using a vibration plate may be the easiest way to move large volume with little effort on your part. It is the single most effective way to help manage symptoms while offering a low impact exercise alternative.
The Fat Disorders Resource Society states; “Vibration machines can be an ideal way to gently exercise your muscles so that you gain strength and tone without putting stress on your joints. Vibration machines improve lymphatic flow, blood flow, muscle tone and bone mass, which is paramount for anyone with a fat disorder”.
Dr Karen Herbst uses and recommends vibration plates as a easy form of exercise due to their incredible capacity to move lymph and boost circulation. She was kind enough to spend some time with me explaining her work, what these fat disorders are and why vibration machines are so beneficial for the fat disorders community.

Short term, using a vibration plate can “speed up” the self care and takes little effort.

Long term whole body vibration can help in managing weight, building strength and stamina, increasing bone density and much more. There are a number of proven benefits associated with using vibration machines and depending on you current physical condition, modifications can be made so that almost anyone can use and progress with this technology.
If you are using or considering a machine I primarily recommend a using oscillating movement, a basic plate will often be all you need for the benefits discussed in this article. They have a natural feel that mimics walking but with less impact, you can easily control intensity (amplitude) and are generally more affordable/accessible.
